Fifth-Gen Computing : Are we at it? (Part 1)

Computer according to the technology used, are classified into generations. Each gen is better than the last. Let us take a quick sight into the computer generations.

Era Before Computers:-

  • They were 'mechanical calculating devices' which were operated manually as well as semi-automatically.
  • Manual devices consisted of Abacus and Napier's bones.
  • Semi-Automatic Consisted of Pascaline, Staffelwalze, Jacqard's loom, difference engine and Analytical engine

Manual Calculating Devices:-

  1. Abacus:- Abacus was traced back as back as 3500 B.C. It consisted of pitted board with beads or pebbles. The modern abacus originated in the 15th century China. It consisted of a rectangular frame carrying a number of rods or wires. The rods consisted of sliding beads to perform Calculations. It is used for simple calculations.
  2. Napier's bones:- It was invented by Jhon Napier in 17th century. It is used for multiplication.
